Monday, 1 October

At the end of this Newsletter, there is notice of an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Group on 29th October. This is to bring our Constitution into line with the Charity Commission requirements. We anticipate that this meeting should take less than 15 minutes. Please don't let deter you from attending on the evening - details below.

At our last meeting on 17th September, there was a talk by Vicky Smith and Jane Appleton about the Sue Ryder Organisation, from the beginning up to the present day. It is a most impressive story and the work they do in providing support and healthcare is incredible.

Next Meeting - Monday 29th October 2012

Our next Group Meeting will be on MONDAY 29th OCTOBER at The Oxford Golf Club (formerly Southfield Golf Club) adjacent to the Churchill, starting at 6.30pm for 7pm. There will be a talk given by our member Kevin Bryan, who is currently taking part in a sponsored 500 mile walk along the ancient pilgrimage route - the Camino de Santiago Trail in Spain. From the e-mails we have received from Kevin, he is enjoying the experience and should have a good story to tell. Kevin is walking in aid of Prostate Cancer UK and if you would like to sponsor him please log on to: virginmoneygiving.com/KEVINBRYANCAMINO.

This will be followed by the usual general discussion on matters you may wish to raise and a get together for a 'chat' and a cup of tea (or something from the bar). There will also be a raffle to cover the cost of room hire etc.

Other Meetings - Saturday 8th December & Wednesday 30th January

A further meeting has been booked for Saturday 8th December. This will be a Skittles Evening with a two course Christmas Dinner at The Gardiners Arms in Tackley (just North of Kidlington). The skittles are not compulsory -the price is £10.00 per head which includes gratuities and prizes. There will not be the usual raffle at this event. We will require payment in advance please - cheques payable to 'The Oxfordshire Prostate Cancer Support Group' no later than 28th November. Cheques (or cash) can be received at the meeting on 29th October, or sent to: The Secretary, OPCSG, 2 Ridgeway Court, Wolage Drive, Wantage, Oxon. OX12 9NP.

Our first meeting in the New Year will be on Wednesday 30th January, 6.30 for 7pm at The Oxford Golf Club, when Mr Brewster has kindly agreed to come and talk to us on a subject of his choice.

Holiday Insurance Cover

At the last meeting, the question was raised regarding holiday insurance cover for Prostate Cancer patients. We made enquiries and it should be possible to get insurance, not at vastly increased rates. There are generally two categories - "receiving treatment" and "have received treatment".

One option is to ask for 'no cover' on Prostate Cancer associated matters. You could try websites for 'Freedom Insurance', 'fishinsurance.co.uk', 'world-first.co.uk', 'allcleartravel.co.uk'. You may wish to talk to Tom Jequier: e-mail brokers@jnib.co.uk telephone 01235 533325, who is most helpful.

As previously mentioned, we are working on the re-design of our posters and literature, required by the reorganisation of the various national organisations. .

Oxfordshire Prostate Cancer Support Group - 12th October 2012.

There will be an Extraordinary General meeting of the Group on 29th October at The Oxford Golf Club, starting at 7pm

Items on the Agenda are as follows:

  1. To agree changes to the current Constitution in order that it complies with the requirements of The Charity Commission.

  2. Any other business that the Chairman may allow.

Application for Charitable Status

Further to our application for Charitable Status, we have been advised that our Constitution does not meet the current requirements of the Charity Commission. This will require a vote from the members and if approved, will complete our application to the Commission. The PDF document is 24 pages long and can be downloaded from the Charity Commission website at: www.charity-commission.gov.uk/library/guidance/gd3text.pdf.

I look forward to seeing you on the 29th October.
