Oxfordshire Prostate Cancer Support Group

Newsletter June 2016

NEXT GROUP MEETING – MONDAY 20 JUNE AT 6.30 FOR 7.00, OXFORD GOLF CLUB, HILLTOP ROAD – WIVES AND PARTNERS ESPECIALLY WELCOME – CHANGE OF SPEAKER

Owing to late unavailability of the advertised speaker there will be a change of speaker and the emphasis of the evening will be slightly different.  We are very fortunate to have been able to arrange for Dr Gill Dean GP to come and talk at short notice.  Gill is a recently retired Oxford GP and a Trustee of UCare, an independent charity committed to improving the treatment and care of cancer patients through research and education.  She will talk about the processes of diagnosing and referring prostate cancer from the GP point of view, and will touch on the role of wives and partners in supporting diagnosed men.  She will be happy to take questions.

Please come along to hear and to discuss, and as always, bring a raffle prize if you can.

THE CHAIRMAN’S WALK – SPONSORSHIP?

As mentioned in the May Newsletter, I am seeking sponsorship in favour of OPCSG for my 125 mile summer walk from my present home in Oxford to my childhood home in Somerset.    There is now a sponsorship page at https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/johngrundy1.  Any contributions from readers of this Newsletter, their friends or colleagues will be most gratefully received and acknowledged.  All the money received will go to further OPCSG’s work supporting men with prostate cancer and their families.  Thank you in advance!

LIFE AFTER PROSTATE CANCER DIAGNOSIS

Professor Eila Watson of Brookes University, with whom we have collaborated before, has a new PhD student joining her team in an established research project.  This researcher is going to be focussing on the experiences of couples affected by prostate cancer.  Before she begins interviewing for her study it would be really helpful if she could do a couple of pilot interviews.  Would any couple feel able to volunteer to be interviewed?  It would take about half an hour to an hour for each interview, the man and partner would be interviewed separately, and doesn't matter what age they are.  If you are willing to help, please contact Eila Watson direct via ewatson@brookes.ac.uk or 01865 482665.  Thank you in advance.

DONATION IN MEMORY OF PETER COLLETT

We acknowledge with thanks donations totalling £275 from his family and friends in memory of the late Peter Collett, a member of OPCSG.
