A NEW HOME FOR THE UROLOGY DEPARTMENT

Got an appointment in Urology Outpatients at the Churchill?  Did you know that the department has been relocated?  Its new home is in the Wytham Wing.  When you are facing the main entrance of the Churchill, go about 200 yards to your right.  The Wytham Wing has a sign at its door.

GROUP MEETING MONDAY 15 JUNE – BRACHYTHERAPY - 6.30 pm Oxford Golf Club

Brachytherapy treatment was recently introduced to Oxford and some of our members have been offered this option.  As a group we know less about this treatment than some others, so it is brilliant that we have a major speaker coming to tell us about this topic.  David Laskow-Pooley is CEO of London Pharma. He was closely involved in the development of brachytherapy treatment in the USA over eight or ten years, and subsequently had an unexpected personal experience of it.  This should be a fascinating evening.  Please come along – and bring a raffle prize if you can.

INCONTINENCE PAD TRIAL – Participants needed

We have received information about a research project at Southampton University to develop washable night time pants for men experiencing urinary incontinence.  It says:

“We are a team of scientists and nurses carrying out a research project to develop an effective and more user-friendly absorbent washable night-time pant for men. We are seeking male volunteers over 18 years who have had treatment for prostate cancer and need to use a pad at night.

If you are a man currently using absorbent products designed for moderate to heavy night-time urinary leakage and would be interested in trying a washable product and giving us your feedback please give us a call.

Please contact:

Bridget Clancy, Research Nurse, School of Health Sciences

Email b.clancy@soton.ac.uk        Tel 023 8120 4141”

Please note that you do not have to be Southampton based to take part – it is open to anyone living in the UK.

AWARENESS EVENTS 2015 – GET CHECKED!

As always, volunteers are needed to help us spread the word about PCa at the following events.  If you can help, even if only for an hour or two, please let John Goldsmith know: 01865 580152.

Monday 29 June – Cassington Bike Night, evening event

Saturday 18 July – Witney Steam Fair

Sunday 30 August – White Horse Show, Uffington

Sunday 4 October – Banbury Boat Day

Report: Bloxfest Music Festival, 9 May: An excellent team of volunteer helpers (John and Janet Goldsmith, George Goldsmith, Mark Baker, Tony Marsh, Dave Gibbard, John Grundy) distributed information and talked to many men and their partners about prostate cancer and the need to get checked.  There’s no way to quantify the outcome, but if only one man gets checked as a result and discovers a cancer in time to treat it effectively, it will have been time well spent.
