Oxfordshire Prostate Cancer Support Group

Newsletter August 2017

NEXT GROUP MEETING - Monday 11 September 6.30 for 7.00 p.m. at Oxford Golf Club, Hill Top Road, OX4 1PF on clinical trials with Nikki Hayward, Senior Nurse, Research and Engagement, CRUK.  Many OPCSG members have attended a number of Open Days and events at CRUK’s Oxford research centre. This will be a chance to learn about clinical trials and how patients can get involved.

There will, of course, as always, be time for members to meet and discuss prostate matters before and after the talk.  New members always welcome.  We are very grateful to Oxford Golf Club for the continued use of their premises at a very favourable rate.  Their collaboration is much appreciated.

THANK YOU…

At a meeting of Witney Rotary Club on Monday 26 June the outgoing President Steve Holborough handed over a most generous cheque for £2608.  This represented the tremendous fundraising effort that Steve had initiated during his year in office as President.  John Grundy expressed the heartfelt thanks of OPCSG to the Rotarians who had worked hard to make this donation possible, and told them that their financial support helped OPCSG to concentrate on its core tasks of supporting men and their families who experience prostate cancer, and spreading awareness of the disease.  Thank you Rotary!

“WHAT IS IT LIKE HAVING PROSTATE RADIOTHERAPY TREATMENT? A PATIENT GUIDE.” NEW NHS VIDEO

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, supported by UCare, has produced a new 10-minute video guide to the nature and procedures of radiotherapy treatment.  It will be helpful to any man preparing for the treatment.  It can be viewed here:

SHOPPING IN WITNEY? AT WAITROSE? IN AUGUST? SUPPORT OPCSG!

Shopping in Witney? At Waitrose? In August? If so you can cast a token in support of OPCSG, which is one of three nominated charities to benefit from the votes of shoppers this month. Every token will increase our share of the donation from Waitrose at the end of the month. It won't cost you a penny. Please tell your friends in west Oxfordshire.

DEPEND UNDERWEAR OFFER

I have received the following message from a contact, which may be of interest to members who experience urinary leakage: “I have 8 unopened packets of Depend disposable pants waist size 28-40ins (144 pantsuit total) and want to give them away.  I wondered if they were something that someone in OPCSG might be able to use.”

If you could use this generous offer please contact me and I will put you in touch with the person making the offer.

YOUR COMMITTEE

The continuing lack of a Secretary is a matter of concern.  We would like to introduce someone to this essential role so that the group can continue to function effectively as now.  If you can offer some help with administrative tasks please contact me directly.  Contact details at the end of the Newsletter.
